Proper Cleaning of Stainless Steel can enhance the corrosion resistance of your stainless steel parts. Orbit Industries, LLC. has been providing surface treatment for Stainless Steel using the Pickling and Passivation process for more than 40 years.

Before Passivation The picture above shows a formed tank head that has been stored outside. Note that the free surface iron contamination introduced in the forming process has begun to oxidize. This is a common problem with many processed or fabricated stainless steel parts.

Pickling can remove this contamination efficiently and economically. Passivation occurs when the processed surface is exposed to the atmosphere. Shown below is one of the same tank heads after being processed by Orbit Industries. Note that the surface is clean and free of rust and scale.

Fountain after Installation

Orbit Industries, LLC. has one of the largest pickling and passivating facilities in the Pacific Northwest. Our dip tank is 21 ft. long x 5 ft. wide x 4 ft. deep allowing for the cleaning and descaling of mill length pipes and other long parts.

Larger parts can be cleaned by using the spray mist application method either at our facility, or on site.

Cleaned for O2 Service

Orbit Industries can clean and prepare your stainless steel for many industrial and commercial applications. From High Purity Water and Oxygen service to Architectural and Structural applications, Orbit Industries has a solution for stainless steel cleaning.

Stainless Steel Cleaning

Passivated parts can be Nitrogen dried, UV inspected, bagged, capped and shipped complete with documentation.

Cleaning and Descaling is done per ASTM A380 or ASTM A-967. Stainless Steel cleaned to your specifications by request.

Passivating FAQ:
When should Stainless Steel be Pickled and Passivated?
When welding or processing has heated stainless steel and a colored oxide layer is present, when forming or working stainless steel has introduced iron contamination, or when stainless steel has been stored in an environment where it has been subjected to dirt or other contaminants.

Cleaan Stainless

Isn't stainless steel already corrosion resistant?
While stainless steel is corrosion resistant, iron contamination may be introduced during fabrication and processing, subjecting the surface to rust and corrosion. During the pickling process this iron is removed, resulting in a less chemically active surface.

Will Pickling and Passivation remove grease and oils?
No, Before the Pickling and Passivation process is begun, any deposits of oil and grease should be removed by using an alkaline cleaner and steam cleaning until the surface is clean and free of deposits.
